It is written entirely in performance terms, so it can be inserted into a specification without a brand name justification and without restricting competition. Adjust quantities, locations and finishes to suit the project. 1 General 1.1 Section includes Supply and installation of retractable step stools that allow a child to reach a washroom sink unaided, with no change to the plumbing, no lowering of the basin and no second set of fixtures. 1.2 Design intent Make handwashing independent for children aged 2 to 8 while keeping the sink at standard adult height for staff, visitors and caregivers. The step folds back on its own after each use: no loose furniture is left in the room, and the floor stays clear for circulation, for wheelchair manoeuvring space and for cleaning. 1.3 Submittals - Manufacturer's data sheet for each model proposed, including dimensions and projection from the counter. - Shop drawings or CAD and Revit files showing layout, clearances and anchoring details. - Manufacturer's installation guide. - Colour sample or selected RAL reference. 1.4 Warranty Manufacturer's warranty against defects in manufacture: five (5) years on the aluminum model, including the retraction mechanism; three (3) years on the steel and removable models. 2 Products 2.1 Description Retractable child step stool, anchored to the floor in front of an existing lavatory, folding back on its own after use. No manufacturer or brand name is specified. Acceptance is governed solely by the performance requirements of Article 2.4; any product meeting them is acceptable. Projection from the counter, anchored configurations: 279 mm (11 in) or less. Types A and B are anchored to the floor; Type C is removable. No configuration is wall mounted. Configurations are indicative: the owner may specify one, several, or leave the choice to the bidder. 2.3 Finish Standard finish: RAL 7047 Telegrey, included. Selection from 190 classic RAL colours, a metallic finish range, or a finish matching the owner's colours, shall be available at additional cost. A 102 mm x 163 mm (4 in x 6.4 in) wayfinding sign is supplied, to be mounted at eye level. 2.4 Performance requirements Any product is acceptable provided it meets all of the following: (a) a step stool anchored to the floor, folding back on its own after use, or (b) a removable, one-piece step stool with no loose or separate parts; rated load capacity declared on the manufacturer's data sheet, not less than 360 kg (800 lb); non slip tread surface; finish resistant to standard sanitary cleaning products; minimum three (3) year warranty; data sheet and layout files provided. 2.5 Evaluation of offers Offers are evaluated against Article 2.4 alone. Where the owner elects to name a reference product for drafting convenience, the words « or equal » shall follow, and an equivalent product meeting Article 2.4 shall be accepted on the same terms. Questions on conformity may be raised during the solicitation period in the form required by the owner. 3 Execution 3.1 Installation Install to the manufacturer's guide, into the concrete slab, using the drilling template supplied. Provide clear floor space in front of the sink matching the projection of the deployed step, outside the manoeuvring space required for a wheelchair. Verify full retraction after installation. 3.2 Coordination with an accessible lavatory Where a lavatory is required to be accessible (ADA 2010, 213.3.4), do not install the unit within the knee and toe clearance (ADA 2010, 306) or the clear floor space (ADA 2010, 305.4, 606.2) of that lavatory; provide it at another lavatory in the same room. Coordinate the location with the lavatory, counter and required clearances shown on the drawings before rough-in. 3.3 Recommended locations - At least one step stool in every washroom serving children and youth, on both the girls' and the boys' side. - In the universal or family washroom where one is provided, and at the sink nearest the entrance. - At sinks in any public washroom serving the community or family spaces of the building. 3.4 Maintenance Clean with standard sanitary products; no lubrication required by the operator. Automatic retraction leaves the floor fully clear for washing. 3.5 Note to the design consultant A public sink sits at a height standardised for an adult: between the ages of 2 and 8, a child does not reach it alone. Written into the scope at the design stage, the step stool integrates with the millwork and the finishes; added after the work is complete, it becomes a loose stool that sits in the circulation path.
